The Bodybuilder’s Guide to Getting Big on a Budget

The bodybuilding lifestyle can be incredibly difficult to maintain as an amateur, where one can easily spend their monthly paycheck affording groceries and supplements, but IFBB Pro Evan “Ox” Centopani has the keys to succeeding on a slim budget.
A great man once said “Everybody wanna be a bodybuilder, but don’t nobody wanna spend no great sums of money on proper nutrition to make sufficient progress.” Alright, Ronnie Coleman’s exact quote may have been slightly different, but the point remains.

A significant calorie surplus is required for any lifter to make steady progress in the gym, not to mention attaining consistent physical growth, but fitting all the necessary food onto one’s shopping list along with rent and other amenities can be a major conundrum. Don’t even get me started on how being in a relationship can stunt the process.

Thankfully, The Ox is here to show us how we can maintain our results and bank balances, showing us how to keep getting big on a budget of $50 per week.

For a grand total of $49.45, The Ox is able to buy just over 10lbs of chicken thighs—the most expensive item at a cost of around $19—84 eggs at a price of a buck per dozen for all our protein and fat requirements, as well as potatoes, oats and enough for one banana per day. There’s even room on the bill for a healthy helping of broccoli to hit some micronutrients at the end.
Add in things such as meat rubs, simple spices or seasoning, and that poultry-heavy diet can actually be turned into a pretty attractive menu. Sure you’ll take a hit in the variety department, but then again, gains are the REAL spice of life.
